St. Hedwig’s Stone at the entrance to the village of Wądroże Wielkie is a legendary stone. Duchess Hedwig of Andechs is said to have left her footprints on the stone, when she came to collect the body of her son, Henry the Pious, who had died fighting the Mongols in the Battle of Wahlstatt in 1241. For centuries Poles and Germans believed that the saint indeed left her footprints upon the stone. When she and Anna, her daughter-in-law, found Henry’s body on the battlefield, they went barefoot to the convent in Trzebnica. They were followed by crowds. Behind Wądroże Wielkie, the women stood on a high stone to once again look at the battlefield. They wept and prayed. The tears made the stone soft so that the sorrowful mother’s footprints could be impressed. For seven centuries the stone was venerated, both by Catholics and Protestants. In the 20th century the owner of the field where the stone stood decided to remove it. When he and his farm-hands struck the stone – it cried in human voice. German newspapers wrote about a miracle and the stone became famous again. You can find it right before the village, if you approach it from Mierczyce, in a little grove on the right.
